The University of Dundee was established by Royal Charter on 1 August 1967. The creation of the University was due to increasing political pressures to admit more students to higher education. Under these pressures it became untenable for Queens College, Dundee to continue as it was, as a college of the University of St Andrews. Charles McKean was educated at Bristol University. After working at national architectural institutions in Edinburgh and London he joined the Department of History at the University of Dundee in 1977.
